Choice Energy Solutions provides a visual energy audit and suggest ways for homeowners to reduce their heating and cooling costs as well as their overall energy usage.  Some products now available through Choice Energy Solutions include Radiant Barrier Insulation, Solar Attic Fans, Solar Water Heaters, and Tubular Skylights.
 
*Most of these energy saving products qualify for various levels of tax credits.  Solar products now have no cap and have been extended to 2016.

 Top energy wasters in most homes

 

1.     Inadequate Insulation
· R-30 is now standard in attics (12”)
· Standard mass insulation (fiberglass/cellulose) will not stop radiant heat energy, therefore a radiant barrier needs to be installed
2.     Leaky windows & doors
·  Poor weather stripping, un-insulated doors and single pane glass windows are serious energy wasters
3.     Old appliances and HVAC equipment
· Older refrigerators/freezers are using 2-3 times the energy as new Energy Star rated units
·  Old washers use much more water than newer front load models
4.     Phantom Loads
·  Phone chargers, TV’s, VCR’s and similar small appliances use electricity even when not turned on.  Plug these into a switched outlet and turn off power when not in use

·  Most attics reach temperatures over 115 degrees on a hot summer day.  Proper attic ventilation will reduce cooling costs and increase shingle life.  Consider a solar powered attic fan which is easy to install and runs on free solar energy.
6.     Water heater tank
·  Water heaters over 4 years old typically have poor insulation and lost up to 40% of their heat while not in use.  Add a thermal blanket or consider a tankless water heater or solar powered system
